" “This training programme is unusual.” Isn't that a bloody understatement. I asked, and even my grandmother can't remember anything like it. We all thought this Oversight Program was a myth, some part of the Computer that didn't actually exist. And these training courses --- we've been getting them with “sleep induction hardware” or something like that. I don't even pretend to understand how that works. I mean, sure, the old legends said that this would happen one day, but I never believed them…

Introduction

In Generation, you play one of the crew of the generation ship Asimov, travelling through interstellar space carrying humanity's last hope. You have grown up on the ship your entire life --- as did your parents and their parents before them, stretching back to distant legends of Earth. You are one of the unique few selected for the Advanced Crew Training Programme --- and it will be your job to lead the rest of the crew through the upcoming trials facing the ship.

Computer is the powerful AI that runs the ship. It is ultimately in charge of everything.

Most inhabitants of the ship just refer to it as Computer, with a capital C. This distinguishes it from other “computers”, those systems that control lower level functions and that can be reprogrammed by mere humans. If the Computer had another name, it has long been forgotten. Computer has also been known to answer to “Asimov” and occasionally “God”.

Others dismiss these stories as self-serving justifications for self-serving guilds, claims of prestige by those who would hoard knowledge to themselves. Regardless, Computer accords them at least some respect, and for all intents and purposes the senior crew members are the Department Heads.

The dynasties are all well represented among the leaders of the ship, and engage in nepotism, explicitly or otherwise. This behavior has led to their continued importance for many generations past, and seems likely to continue far into the future.

The Major Factions

Everyone belongs to a sector. Others associate themselves more closely with their department. Of course, not everybody allows where they live and work define them. Some people have a cause, a raison d'être --- a philosophy to live by if you will. Algae

As anyone from Recycling will tell you, the Asimov runs on algae. From the nutrient slurry that is processed by fabbers into something resembling food, to the scrubbing of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and conversion to oxygen. The oxygen gardens may look nice, but ultimately can't compare in efficiency to the algae vats distributed around the ship (mainly in the low-g portions).

Welcome

Hi, and welcome to Generation, the Michaelmas '12 / Hilary '13 freeform game for the Oxford University Roleplaying Games Society. If you've never played any sort of roleplaying game before, hopefully this quick introduction will answer a few questions. If you're a seasoned player, a lot of this should be familiar to you.

While there are always differences here and there, the sections below should give a rough idea of experiences everyone will be familiar with.

You may only spend this point on skills you have used in the turnsheets since your character was last upgraded. For example, if you have no skill points in Stealth, but have been attempting (and probably failing) to sneak past guards, you can buy basic stealth. If you have n…

PvP, or Player vs. Player conflict, arises where two or more player characters have conflicting plans or goals.

PvP conflict in this sense can be anything from having an argument with a rival, to secretly undermining their political powerbase, to having a squad of goons beat them up and steal their lunch money, to hunting them down and assassinating them. PvP is a scale, from minor conflict with little at stake, to intense conflict with lives and livelihoods at stake. Often, confl…

You’re a lot more careful (or paranoid) than others.

OOC: This is a game style quirk --- when adjudicating the outcomes of your actions, the GM team will take the least risky interpretation of your actions. This may grant you some measure of protection against being attacked or getting into dangerous situations, but you’re less likely to come away with the big haul if it requires sticking your neck out. In Generation, skills and items are enablers. They primarily define what you can do, and what talents you can rely upon when carrying out your plan. Assuming you have a “good enough” skill level, having a greater ability will not enhance the action. If you have questions about the feasibility of a plan, contact the GM team and we'll happily answer questions.

The main sport on board Asimov is NGF. Even children play a version of it in their low-gravity playgrounds. The league consists of teams from each sector and department, with Red and Green traditionally fighting over the top two spots, leaving the other teams to squabble for third place. The Computer runs the league, and the referees and crowd control (if needed) are provided by the Department of Harmony. The Computer allocates a large resource prize to the winning sector or depart…

Summary

	* A turnsheet period represents a month of ship life.
	* You have three major actions during this time.
	* Actions require a plan to stand any real chance of succeeding.
	* The deadline for turnsheeting each week is Midnight Thursday Evening (that is, midnight between Thursday and Friday). Deadlines are strict.
	* A list of turnsheets for each week can be found on your user page. Follow the link on your page, and then click “Create this page” in order to get started.

Introduction

Welcome to the Society Game! If you're new here, this page exists as a guide to explain how we run the game. It's pretty simple, but feel free to ask the GM team if you have any questions. If you're an old hand, then nothing much has changed since previous games - feel free to skip past this page.
