Sample Characters

The following are some sample characters created by the GM team as examples and inspiration. They're just examples and won't be appearing in the actual game, so don't worry if your concept is already taken here.

Lisbeth Viteri: Cosa Nostra Troubleshooter

Background

Lisbeth's parents were killed when she was ten and away on a school trip to toroid 2 as part of an internal family struggle. As a result Lisbeth herself has been cut out of the benefits befitting her membership of the Viteri dynasty. While Computer records the murders as unsolved, she suspects her evil uncle Tom was behind it, and she has dedicated her life to getting revenge. Of course, merely killing him would be too easy, first she must undo his life's work, steal his job of great-aunt Nicola's go to troubleshooter and make certain he knows true despair first.

Character Goals

  • Show she is better than Tom at every turn.
  • Become Nicola's right hand man.
  • Get Tom kicked out of the Cosa Nostra.
  • Eventually kill Tom after explaining why he has to die.

Skills

  • Stealth Specialist: Impersonation (3 points) — Lisbeth can pretend to be anybody to find the source of a problem.
  • Combat Expert (2 points) — Sometime problems require creative solutions
  • Social Competent (1 point) — Of course, being able to talk your way out of an awkward situation is an essential survival trait in this line of work.
  • Larceny Competent (1 point) — As is being able to pick the locks and create passable fake ID.

Quirks

  • Reckless (neutral) — Lisbeth likes to take risks that make her feel alive.
  • Stolen ID (+ive) and Off the Grid (neutral) — You need a way to hide, to blend in, so a second identity is sort of a requirement. And being off the grid is very useful when Computer or someone else is looking for you.
  • Contacts (Cosa Nostra) (+ive) — Lisbeth is known to hose who matter and call her in to get the job done.
  • Dark secret (-ive) — She's killed several important people; if their family found out it could get very messy.
  • Pursued (-ive) — Uncle Tom put out a contract on her; from time to time whoever he hired catches up with her, and needs to be dealt with.
  • Rival (-ive) — Lisbeth is in direct “friendly” competition with Uncle Tom to displace him as Nicola's right hand man.
  • Mystery Flaw #1 (-ive) — What could possibly go wrong?

Other Details

  • Lisbeth's current stolen identity is that of Patricia Hart, an enforcer from the Department of Harmony. This works well if she needs to get rid of certain people for the Cosa Nostra…
  • As Patricia is originally from a grey sector, Lisbeth maintains a residence there, at least when she's not hanging out in Blackout.
  • Patricia doesn't really care about football, except when she's been tasked with ensuring a particular team wins. Of course, being public about that would make her stand out, so if anyone asks she's an ardent Green fan.
  • Patricia is obviously a member of the Cosa Nostra.

Erin White: Seasoned Cartographer

Background

Growing up in the White Sector in an apartment very close to one of the main centres of activity for the Bureau of Cartography, Erin and his siblings often played hide and seek in the winding corridors and service vents. This led to him growing up with a fascination for the many hidden places the ship possessed off the beaten track, and as soon as he was old enough, he joined the faction. He is officially a lackey with the Department of Engineering, but because he tries to retrieve things he finds on his excursions, his superiors tend to leave him to his own devices.

Character Goals

  • Explore the ship and find all the secrets it may offer.
  • Rise in the ranks of the Bureau of Cartography.
  • Become renowned ship-wide as the most reliable cartographer.

Skills

  • Athletics Competent (1 point) — Erin has always maintained a good level of fitness.
  • Exploration Expert (2 points) — Years of practice have honed his knowledge of the ship, and his skills at dealing with the unknown.
  • Stealth Competent (1 point) — Erin always was the best at hide and seek.

Quirks

  • Quick Reflexes (+ive) — Evading the impending hazards of abandoned territory has become second nature.
  • Artistic (+ive) — Erin's maps and charts have a beauty and elegance that surpasses those of his rivals, attracting a respectable level of custom.
  • Incompetent Ally — His siblings are not as competent as him, yet insist on exploring too, occasionally getting lost or stuck in the bowels of the ship.

Other Details

  • Despite being too busy to watch them often, Erin is a keen supporter of the White Sector Null-Grav team.
  • Erin has a tendency to eavesdrop on conversations he shouldn't, but people rarely believe the gossip he spreads.

Sammy Red: Red Team Roof Attack

Background

Sammy always wanted to be a NGF star from an early age, trying to watch every match and get in on the action. Now she's older, years of training have put her on the brink of stardom. She's a key player in Red Sector's team, and this year they're going for the finals! Thankfully she's managed to get out of most of her mundane work in Harmony, thanks to a mysterious benefactor writing her off the schedules and leaving helpful training tips in her compartment…

Character Goals

  • Win the NGF finals with Red Team
  • Figure out who her benefactor is, and why they're helping her
  • Find some way of getting out of work permanently

Skills

  • Athletics (specialism: Null Grav Football maneuvers) — 3 points — She's the best Roof Attack the team has had for years, and she trains every day if she can.
  • Combat (expert) — 2 points — Sometimes the game gets a little rough. It's not against the rules if the ref doesn't see, right?
  • Stealth (competent) — 1 point — Skipping work to go play might be easier with her mysterious watcher, but she still sometimes needs to slip past her coworkers.

Quirks

  • The Enemy's Gate Is Down — positive — Lots of training in null-grav over the years means she's got a pretty good handle on her spatial awareness.
  • Hidden Master — negative — Whoever is watching over her, they've recently started getting more insistent that she do certain things, and the notes left in her compartment are starting to get more threatening than helpful.
  • Why Does It Always Have To Be Me? — negative — Sammy has a bad habit of dropping the wrong thing at the wrong time or saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. In fact, sometimes she's more of a liability to Harmony than she is a help.

Other Details

  • Obviously Sammy supports Red team.
  • Sammy has a bit of a conspiracy-theorist streak, and is a member of the Children of Earth. She strongly believes that aliens are real, and that possibly her benefactor is one.

Dunstan Grey: Recorder and wannabe newspaper journalist

Background

Dunstan is a Harmony Recorder who is also a Follower of the Executive. He knows that information is vital, and that it should all be recorded and disseminated. However, sometimes his roles as Recorder and as Follower are slightly at odds, as Harmony wants him to create morale-boosting news and archive old material where nobody can get to it, whereas the Followers think all information should be free. Dunstan is trying to create a newspaper separate from the Computer, so that neither Harmony nor the Computer can censor or suppress information.

Character Goals

  • Create a newspaper independent from the Computer.
  • Investigate important events to record them for posterity.
  • Find out how Briony Rainbow beats him to the scoops.

Skills

  • Academic expert — 2 points — Dunstan reads a lot of things about everything.
  • Social (competent) — 1 point — He knows enough not to put his foot in it.
  • Hacker (competent) — 1 point — To create a Computer-separate publication, he'll need more than competent, but this is a good start.

Quirks

  • Play it safe — neutral
  • Many Bothans — +ve — Great for investigative journalism.
  • Artistic — +ve — useful for publishing
  • Rival — -ve — Dunstan's plan to publish things has led to a fellow Recorder, Briony Rainbow, trying to screw him over all the time. She always seems to get the scoop just before Dunstan, and Dunstan will try to find out how she manages it.

Other Details

  • Department of Harmony - recorder.
  • One of the grey sectors.
  • Member of the Followers of the Executive
  • Supports Team Harmony, and also Team Green.

Gordon Rainbow: Perfectionist Engineer

Background

Gordon was raised amidst the glamour and artistry of Rainbow Sector, and always seems to have resented this. He has been a solid, dependable member of Engineering for over 40 years, and is quite satisfied with his life as it is. He is a bit of a perfectionist, prefers machines to people, and hates when things don't work as they should.

Character Goals

  • Keep his section of Engineering running absolutely perfectly.
  • Do something about this new manager that thinks he should be sharing his experience in Solutions
  • Find a way to avoid being recycled on his upcoming 65th birthday.

Skills

  • Engineering (Specialism 'Good as New', Specialism 'spotting problems early', Specialism 'knowledgeable' ) — 5 points — When Gordon fixes something, he fixes it better than it has been for a long time, and often recognises a fault before anyone else. He has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of ship systems, and will often remember exactly what piece is needed from his long experience.

Quirks

Play it safe - neutral - slow and steady wins the race, right?

  • Minions— +ive — a small team of junior engineers who know that doing as he suggests will save them time in the long run.
  • Old — -ive- — Gordon is increasingly aware of his upcoming birthday, and knows he will have to do something impressive to stay alive - which is a problem, as he isn't sure what.

Other Details

  • Gordon is originally from Rainbow but now lives in one of the Grey sectors, finding it more peaceful. He is quite territorial; he knows how he likes things and doesn't like anyone interfering.
  • He secretly believes in the Astrologers and listens religiously to their predictions, but would vehemently deny it if asked.
  • Gordon tries to avoid most things that come from Harmony, and this includes NGF which he doesn't care for in the slightest. If you pressed him publicly, he'd say that he sort of follows Engineering, but he doesn't have the time to watch every match (privately, he just doesn't care).
